Spring changes

We’ve been back in Germany for over a month now and have been extremely busy at Datscha Fröhden. Falk, our friend and neighbour, is undertaking a permaculture design course and has come up with a new design for our whole outside space. Artur’s parents visited for two weeks and brought us a car load of plants, which took about a week to replant in the garden. Here are some of the main changes we’ve made in the last few weeks.

The chicken fence – previously the chickens were allowed to freely roam the hof, but this meant chicken shit everywhere and the inability to grow any kind of vegetables or flowers as they’d be destroyed and eaten. Now we’ve fenced off a small part of the hof for the chickens, so we are able to plant more freely in the hof and walk without watching our step. We also fenced off an area around the plum trees so they can hang out behind their house.

Took down the fence at the back – we took down the back fence and planted berry bushes – hoping they will grow and eventually become a natural, edible fence.

Amy started laying – which means we now have blue/green eggs! Hopefully Eagle, our other grünleger will also start laying soon.
